Christopher Nicholson's novel The Elephant Keeper was first published in the United Kingdom in 2009. It has also been published in the United States, and in translation in China, Taiwan, Spain and the Netherlands. The Elephant Keeper was shortlisted for the Costa Novel Award and the Encore Award. A serial adaptation was broadcast as a BBC Radio 4 'Book of the Week'.
Set in late 18th century England, the novel tells the story of the relationship between a female elephant and her keeper in a difficult and uncertain world.
